A practical cleaning routine for road-salt residue, dirt, and everyday grime, guided by your door manufacturer’s instructions.

Check the finish before you start

Painted steel, wood, glass, and composite finishes can have different care requirements. Find the care guide for your door and follow its product recommendations. Choose a day when water will not freeze on the driveway or around the bottom seal, and keep the door stationary while cleaning.

Keep cleaning gentle

For finishes that permit it, use mild soap and lukewarm water with a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse as directed. Pay attention to residue near the bottom of the door. Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive cleaners; do not assume a pressure washer is suitable. Keep water away from the opener, controls, and electrical connections.

Notice damage without adjusting hardware

Cleaning is an opportunity to notice flaking finish, damaged seals, or bent panels. Photograph anything unusual for a service conversation. Leave spring, cable, bracket, and track adjustments to a trained technician. Cleaning the surface and correcting an operating problem are different jobs.
